Wiha BiCuts - Quality German Engineering Meets True Innovation

The Wiha BiCuts are truly a one of a kind pair of diagonal cutters. Without using its most defining feature, the power button, they function just like any other pair of dikes (except of course, with the same top tier German engineering that Wiha puts into all of their tools).

What Happens When You Push the Power Button?

When the power button on the BiCuts is pressed, it actually changes the pivot point of the tool, effectively increasing the leverage by 200%, which decreases the force needed from the user by 50%. It’s truly a mind blowing experience when you use these for the first time and feel the difference between using the BiCuts with the power off and then with it on. See Mad Electrician’s video “Wiha BiCuts - A Hand Tool With a Power Button?” for an example of these cutting through a chain.

So Why Not Always Leave the Power Button On?

As with any pair of high leverage cutters (e.g. bolt cutters), typically the higher the leverage, the narrower the opening of the actual cutters. The same principal holds true with the Wiha BiCuts. With the increased cutting leverage comes a decreased opening for cutting. For this reason, it’s quite nice to have the option to switch between high leverage and standard cutting. It’s truly like having two tools in one beautifully designed package.

Putting aside the novelty of the power button, which isn’t at all just a gimmick and actually works incredibly well, let’s talk about the positive and negative of these bad boys.

The Positive:

  1. These things look and feel amazing. As stated before, this is top tier German engineering from Wiha and if you’ve ever used their hand tools before, you know exactly what you can expect out of these.

  2. The insulated version of this tool, which is shown in this article, isn’t too bulky. This may seem like something that isn’t worth pointing out, but often times insulated tools can have excessively large handles compared to a relatively small cutter. That’s not the case with these.

  3. As stated previously, the power button function works incredibly well.

  4. There’s little to no break in period with these.

The Negative Not as Positive Things:

There really isn’t anything that Mad Electrician considers to be negative about these, but there are some things worth pointing out.

  1. The power button spins freely rather than being in one position/ orientation at all times.

  2. The power button can’t be pushed with the BiCuts completely closed. In order to push the button, the dikes must be slightly opened in order to align the second pivot point with the button. This seems a little strange at first but is something you’ll get used to after just a few uses.

  3. Sometimes, especially when carrying in your pocket, the power button will get halfway pushed in, effetely locking the pair of diagonal cutters. In order to “unlock them”, you need to either push the button all the way out or all the way in.

Final Thoughts:

These are a fantastic pair of dikes. Given their ingenuity, versatility, and coming from such a reputable German tool company, Mad Electrician highly recommends checking these out and getting a pair.
